Explosion refers to a general one-way pattern of expansion shared by the West's social, political, and economic enterprises.[1] It was the general pattern of the West's institutions until the coming of electric media, at which time implosion became the dominant pattern instead.

Both explosion and implosion result in violent change, but implosion is the more violent of the two by far.[2]
